Join us for a hands-on Green Woodworking Workshop with the North Jersey Woodworkers Association!

This session will take you through the entire process of using freshly cut, or "green," wood. You'll tour the workspace, learn about essential tools and techniques, and gain practical experience with shaping, splitting, and drying wood.

Whether you're a seasoned woodworker or a curious beginner, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore Greenwood working in a casual, interactive environment!

Agenda and Schedule

1. Introduction and Tour (15 minutes)

  • Coffee/Breakfast

  • Tour around the work spaces and shop.

  • Brief introduction to Greenwood working and why chair making and greenwoodworking go hand in hand.

2. Tool Overview (15 minutes)

  • Overview of tools and devices/jigs used in Greenwood working.

3. Shave Horse and Draw Knife Demo & Hands on (30 minutes)

  • Overview explanation of the shave horse.

  • Demonstration of how it pairs with the draw knife for shaping wood.

  • (Optional) Hands on activity to get acquainted with the drawknife and shave horse

4. Sourcing Logs (10 minutes)

  • Discussion on sourcing logs and managing them in a residential space.

5. Log Splitting Demo and Hands-On (25 minutes)

  • Live demonstration of log splitting.

  • (Optional) Hands-on activity for participants to try splitting logs.

6. Riving Demonstration and Hands-On (30 minutes)

  • Explanation and demo at the riving break.

  • (Optional) Hands-on activity to split different-sized parts, read the grain, and select good parts.

7. Shave Horse Activity (45 minutes)

  • Hands-on session at the shave horses playing with all the tools.

  • Making square parts from rived wood, shaping them into octagonal parts, rounding into a final part ready for the kiln.

  • (Optional) Hands on activity to shape wood at the horse

8. Kiln and Moisture Content (10 minutes)

  • Visit the kiln, construction overview, and discuss drying wood parts.

  • Importance of moisture content in chair making.

9. (Optional) Q&A Session/Additional Resources/Books (10 minutes)

  • Open floor for any questions and discussion that did not emerge organically during the session.

10. (Optional) Steam Bending

  • A whole other workshop in its own right, we can touch on steam bending techniques.

  • Overview of the steam box, forms, bending straps, common issues encountered during the bend

11. (Optional) Other Greenwood Projects

  • Brief introduction to other Greenwood projects like spoons and shrink pots.

  • Demonstration of spoon tools and shrink pot techniques.

12. (Optional) Finishing a greenwood chair part

  • What happens after the part is dry from the kiln?
